Why I think that Y2K music is the best era.

Let’s be real that there is a certain type of high that only hits when you hear the opening of Oops!…I Did It Again or the unforgettable beats of Shakira’s Hips Don’t Lie. The late 90’s and the early 2000’s were a sonic revolution. Sometimes I think that I love Y2K music because it isn’t just music. It’s a whole world frozen in time.

When I picture that era, I don’t just hear the songs. I see flip phones, low-rise denim, metallic outfits, glossy magazines and music video countdowns after school. I think about waiting to catch a premiere instead of refreshing my instagram feed. Watching artists like Britney Spears and Jennifer Lopez on TV felt like an event. You couldn’t rewind it constantly. You just had to be there. Music felt physical. You bought the CD. You read the lyric booklet. You memorized the thank-you notes. You read the magazines.

That era felt like standing on the edge of something new. The year 2000 wasn’t just a number; it felt symbolic. Everything was chrome and futuristic and dramatic. Even the way artists like Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera presented themselves felt bold and intentional. They weren’t trying to be relatable. They were stars.

And we believed in stars.

It was pre-9/11. Pre-social media pressure. Pre-everything being documented. There was drama, sure, but it didn’t feel heavy in the same way the world can feel heavy now. The era felt like the last moment before the internet completely reshaped how we see ourselves. Before we started branding our personalities. Before comparison became constant.

There was something slower about it and I think that’s why I keep going back to it.

Y2K music reminds me of a time when pop stars were larger than life and not constantly accessible. When music videos had storylines and choreography you tried to learn in your bedroom. When calling into a radio station felt like the only way to be heard.

It wasn’t perfect. But it felt optimistic.

And maybe what I really love isn’t just the sound — it’s the feeling that the future was bright, shiny, and full of possibility.
